Advertisers, Do they own you?

Did you know that every time you sit down and watch TV, or surf the web, you are getting drowned with advertisement? Advertisers are sneaky when they try to get to kids. For example, The Health and Human services recently hired Shrek to advertise to kids for a healthier life style. Many children already have a connection with Shrek. McDonald’s ads have Shrek in them, but so do the health and human services commercials. Confusing, especially if you are a little kid. Also, Dr. Susan Linn, the director of the campaign for a commercial free childhood, said, “Shrek is in 16 different commercials for 71 different brands of junk food.” Advertisers spend over 17$ billion dollars for advertisements target children with, Brand Name loyalty, buzz advertising, viral advertising.

Buzz advertising is when a company finds the “popular/cool” kids in the community and pays them to use their profit and start a buzz. Get it? Buzz advertising and the kids start a buzz. That’s funny. But they don’t only try to find the cool kids in that neighborhood; they also try to find celebrities our age. For example, Ryan Sheckler, or The High School Musical cast. They would pick Ryan Sheckler, to sponsor their company. They pick these celebrities because we can relate to them. But, would you really just wear, or use a product just because the “trend setters” are using them. I wouldn’t. Some people look up to those kids, but some people don’t.

Next on my list is Brand Name Loyalty, what advertisers call, from cradle to the grave. What is cradle to grave? Cradle to grave is when they advertise to you from birth to death. When you were a little kid did you have a princess or a Spiderman room? Well that is brand name loyalty. The little babies see that picture everyday and start to love it. They make that picture in their mind to be home. So when they are out and about and see that same picture they get excited and happy. When they are older they remember that picture and be loyal to that company. They don’t really care about the cost, because the person is so loyal to it already.

If you have a Myspace have you ever gotten a comment saying “oh my god I got a 300 dollar Macys card you should get one” or something like that? Or have you ever gotten any pop-ups? That is called viral advertising. Viral advertising spreads like a virus, when someone (advertisers) are getting information off of you and making it seem like you are the one who is advertising to your friends. They also do viral advertising in emails. Say your subject line was something like “Hey, Let’s go skateboarding tomorrow!” a pop-up will probably pop-up saying something about skateboarding. Personally I think that is a huge personal space problem. I mean, viral advertising is random people watching you while you are online like you are a rat in a maze in a little glass box. Invisible people just staring at you, CREEPY!

America has less laws and regulations about advertising to kids then any other democracy. We really don’t have any laws. There are laws about how many minutes of commercials we can have. But, there is no law stating that we cant have a whole show a that is really just an add about a toy. There used to be a law like that in 1984. You can really just advertise to people even if it is unfair and un-safe. It’s not bad that the advertisers are doing their jobs but just don’t advertise about un-healthy things.

Immersive advertsisng, buzz advertising, viral advertising. You didn’t know that every time you sit down and watch some t.v. they are drowning you with advertisment.  Mcdonalds adds have shrek in them, but so do the health and human services commercials. Confusing right? Expecially if you are a little kid. Advertisers spend over 10$ billion dollars for advertisments, and most of them are to kids or teenagers. Advertisers are the sneakiest people ever

For Homework i read and article about marketing to kids.  Not just teenagers but also kids 0-3 yeas old. I know 0 years old? In the first passage it said “Parents who sat their newborn babys in front of TVs hoping to make them geniuses only turn them into little consumers.” That is crazy deep man.

I really liked the second passage. It pretty much says how it is really the parents fault that the littler kids are getting more marketed to. For example with television. A quote from the second passage is, “The only thing they were getting was how to recognize characters.” she says. “It’s Dora. It”s Elmo. The only other scenario in which they”re going to encounter these characters is in a scenario in which that character is trying to sell them something. Like, backpacks, band-aids, toothbrushes.”

“Advertising and marketing is a factor in childhood obesity, in eating disorders, precocious, irresponsible sexuality, youth violence, underage drinking, and underage tobacco use.”

I have one question for you advertiser folk who advertise drinking and smoking to young children.

DO YOU WANT US ALL TO DIE?

I learned about alot of things, alot of different kinds of advertising. My favortie kind is buzz-street-stealth advertising. Buuz advertising is when the advertising businesses find the “coolest” kids in the community and pay them to wear or “buy” the product to start a buzz. I think that is why it is called buzz advertsisng.

The only problem with buzz advertising is some people dontdo what the cool kids do. Some people really just dont care.

Thank You Come Again =)

According to the Center of a New American Dream, babies young as six months of age can form mental images of corporate logos and mascots. By the time children head off to school most can recognize hundreds of brand logos.

Buzz or Street marketing- Buzz marketing is a new twist on “word of mouth” method. Buzz marketing is really ust to find the “coolest” kids in a community and have the use or wear the product.

Marketers have a challenge of cutting through the intense advertising of young children.

One studio’s plan for a violent R-rated film stated, ” Our goal was to find the elusive teen target audience, and make sure that everyone between the ages of 12 and 18 was exposed to the film.

We read and article about www.neopets.com and how they advertise to little kids. THIS ARTICLE  was very interesting to me. One child said that if they didnt have alot of homework they would play for a very long time. But, if they had alot of homework, they couldnt play. Actually one kid even said  when she first started to go on the site she would see Mcdonalds and Disney. She doesnt really like all the sponsoring stuff.

To define Immersive advertising, it is really just product placement. For examplpe, in transformers, they go up on a chevy logo for like 1 minute. IMMERSIVE ADVERTISING!

My Opinion on Immersive advertising is that it is a good idea, but not for little kids. Mcdonalds needs to stop because they are really bad for you. But, maybe cars can do it. eww thats nasty.

In Mr.Mayo’s class we did a skype video confrence with class in Nevada and it was really fun. They asked us questions about our  movies we made. Alot of people asked about my friends movie Because Of Cheekers. NOBODY ASKED ABOUT MURPHY THE LEPERCAUN!!! <–spelling?

I like doing skype confrence, and i hope that we can do one with the kids in Denver.

Thank  you come again =)

In Mr.Mayos class today we read an article about little chinesse cops.  These cops censor your internet usage.  They are creepy. They come on every once in a while.  They make you not go to any website that has nudity, profanity, illegal gambling,  books and film.

Mr.mayo also made us go to the great firewall of china which is the firewall of china. It blocks EVERYTHING. Me and my friend even tried www.barbie.com and www.barney.com and it was blocked.

thank you come again. :D
